The Black Affairs Advisory Board’s Black Heritage Planning Committee (BHPC) hosted its annual “Community Pillar” awards and “Young Pillar” scholarship presentations on June 20 with a brunch at the Marshall L. Davis African Heritage Cultural Arts Center in Miami’s Liberty City.

This year’s Community Pillar honorees were:
William “DC” Clark, president of the DCS Mentorship Program
Dr. Richard “Rick” Holton, president, Dr. Rick Holton & Associates and Teen Policy Academy Inc.
Dr. Scotty Izavbigie, Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office an Member, Edo National Association
Sondra Julien, retired cultural ambassador and founder of Model Cities Cultural Arts Program
Carmen Morris, marketing manager, Marshall L. Davis African Heritage Cultural Arts Center
Pastor Melissa A. Rolle Scott, senior pastor, Mt. Calvary National Church of God Inc.
Teri Williams, president and CEO, OneUnited Bank
The “Jason Jenkins Corporate Community Pillar” award was presented to William “Bill” Dozier. The board renamed its “Corporate Community Pillar” award in honor of Jason Jenkins, senior vice president of Communications and Community Affairs for the Miami Dolphins, who received the award in 2022, but tragically passed that same year. The award is given each year to individuals who embody public service in a corporate space.
The Black Affairs Advisory Board also awarded scholarships to four Young Pillars who are slated to begin or complete their educational pursuits.

Mikael Gachelin, Florida A&M University
Elijah Smith, Broward College
“Since 1999, the Black Affairs Advisory Board’s Black Heritage Planning Committee, has selected individuals who have made positive contributions to the African American community and have a deep commitment to public service. They have chosen to do the work without fanfare for years in their chosen paths,” said Edgar Wright, chair of the Black Heritage Planning Committee.
