From nature walks and outdoor social gatherings to sensory-focused activities, the community regularly incorporates its beautiful outdoor spaces into daily programming. Residents can enjoy peaceful courtyards, shaded gathering areas, two landscaped gardens, and a vibrant butterfly garden, all of which encourage relaxation, conversation and meaningful connection with nature.

Research continues to highlight the benefits of spending time outdoors, particularly for older adults. Nature-based activities have been shown to reduce anxiety, support emotional well-being and improve cognitive engagement among seniors. Therapeutic gardening programs have also been found to promote happiness, social interaction and a greater sense of purpose.

Palace Gardens resident Mark Havlin knows firsthand the benefits of being in a garden setting and making nature part of his daily routine. A Miami native, Havlin dedicated 22 years of service as a Miami-Dade County police officer. Throughout his career, he focused on helping others and protecting his community. Today, he continues to serve those around him in meaningful ways.

One of his greatest passions is gardening. A true green thumb, Havlin has devoted his time and creativity to enhancing the Memory Care Garden, carefully replanting colorful annuals and helping shape the space with his own vision. His efforts have transformed the garden into a welcoming destination where residents can enjoy fresh air, colorful blooms and sensory experiences that stimulate memories and spark conversation.

“Outdoor spaces provide so many opportunities for meaningful engagement,” said Alejandro Medina, Activities Director at The Palace Gardens’ assisted living community. “Whether residents are planting flowers, watching butterflies visit the garden, enjoying a social activity outside or simply taking in the sights and sounds of nature, those experiences can have a positive impact on mood, well-being, and overall quality of life. Mark’s dedication to our garden has made it an even more special place for everyone who lives here.”
