On June 20, GFWC Florida District 11 gathered at the Miami Woman’s Club for its annual Spring Workshop, where club leaders from throughout South Florida came together to exchange ideas, plan for the coming year, and support the new district administration. It marked the first official workshop led by newly installed District 11 director Shirley Pardon, who took a heartfelt moment to recognize outgoing 2024-26 district director Dr. Ruth Martinez, presenting her with flowers and her district director pin in appreciation of her outstanding leadership and dedicated service.
That same weekend, many District 11 members attended the elegant Operation Smile Gala aboard the Biscayne Lady Yacht, where former GFWC Florida president Sharon Oliphant was honored alongside Dayanara Torres, Dr. Rafael Gottenger, and Reggie Prevail for their humanitarian efforts benefiting children around the world.
The following week, many of those same volunteers traveled west as GFWC International president Suellen Brazil welcomed delegates to the GFWC International Convention at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, AZ. The Florida delegation was well represented during the colorful processional that included members of the new GFWC Roatan Woman’s Club in Honduras. The Honduran club’s president, Rita Tennyson, also is an active member of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club and hosts the club’s popular monthly Gringo Bingo charity fundraisers.
By the way, the next Gringo Bingo will be Tuesday, July 14, from 7-9 p.m., at Birdie Bistro in Coral Gables. Unfortunately, the June 22 event was canceled due to illness; so, let’s try to make this next event on Bastille Day a great one.
Books & Books in Coral Gables was filled to capacity on June 26 as Jeneissy Azcuy celebrated the release of Culebra, the political thriller she co-authored with Armando H. Diaz. During the lively discussion, guests even speculated that the fast-paced novel could one day become a movie or streaming mini-series.
Inspired by the true story of Operation Pedro Pan, which rescued more than 14,000 Cuban children fleeing communism between 1960 and 1962, Culebra follows the journey of a 15-year-old Cuban refugee who narrowly survives a tragic crossing of the Florida Straits before becoming entangled in political intrigue during the tense days of the Cuban Missile Crisis. It is a compelling story that combines history, suspense, and courage.
