The park is intended to pay tribute to the men and women in uniform who served their country and helped secure the nation’s freedoms.
Olga Cadaval, the village’s Human Resources and Communications director, estimated that about 100 guests attended.
Village manager Nick Marano, a distinguished Marine Corps veteran, served as the emcee and was in full uniform complete with medals. Speakers included U.S. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar. Others attending were State Sen. Alexis Calatayud, State Rep. Omar Blanco, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Cohen Higgins, Jorge Lopez of Waypoint Contracting Inc., Oliver Moore of Chic Fill-A and a veteran, and Mayor Karyn Cunningham. Local veteran and Veterans Park Task Force member Cesar Lastra gave the invocation.
Rep. Salazar announced that she arranged another $1 million for the project in addition to the $250,000 in federal funding already allocated for Phase 1, which covered the initial architectural design of the park. The park is just a few blocks away from the Marlin Moore American Legion Post 133, located in the village, and decorated members of that post were among those in attendance.
In addition to the other speakers, Mayor Cunningham addressed the crowd and said she was pleased with the progress of the new park.
“Today’s Veterans Park groundbreaking was a powerful reminder of what can happen when vision, teamwork, and dedication come together in service of a community,” Mayor Cunningham said. “Veterans Park will become a place of reflection, inspiration, and community pride for generations to come, and today marked the beginning of that legacy.”
