After 58 years at the helm, Thomas P. Murphy Jr., founder, chair and CEO, is formally passing the baton to the next generation, appointing his sons, Tom C. Murphy and Sean Murphy, as co-CEOs. Murphy will remain actively involved as chair of the Executive Board.

The brothers have served as co-presidents for the past 11 years, helping guide the firm’s continued growth and expansion.

The transition reflects a carefully planned, multi-year succession strategy designed to ensure continuity, accountability, and long-term success. The change embraces the same principles that built the firm: integrity, transparency, disciplined execution, and best-in-class quality.

“Coastal has always been about trust, craftsmanship, and relationships that stand the test of time,” said Tom P. Murphy Jr. “This company is my life’s work. Tom C. and Sean earned this responsibility the right way, through a strong educational foundation at the University of Florida’s Rinker School, working in the field, understanding the details, managing risk, and proving they could lead long before stepping into these roles. With a strong pipeline and expansion into Jacksonville, Coastal is well positioned for the next generation of growth.”

Murphy’s passion for building began in childhood. His father, Tom Sr., also was a general contractor. It was at the very young of age 12 that Murphy began tagging along with him to job sites across the Southeast U.S. Those early experiences sparked a lifelong passion and drive.

While attending the University of Miami, Murphy became the youngest licensed contractor in Florida history at just 19. By age 20, he launched his first company, working out of an old Volkswagen van and taking on small jobs wherever he could find them, from paneling rooms to building backyard patios.

In those early years, he began assembling a core group of teammates who would continue working alongside him through successive ventures. That growing team and shared experience ultimately evolved into what would become Coastal Construction. In 1988, the company was officially named Coastal Construction, but its foundation had already been years in the making through the people, projects, and culture Murphy had been building from the very beginning.

Since its founding, Coastal has delivered approximately 50 million square feet of vertical construction and operates statewide, with operations in Miami, the Florida Keys, Orlando, Tampa, Palm Beach, Naples, with expansion into Jacksonville later this year.

Under the motto, “It’s not just business; it’s personal,” Coastal has built many landmark projects such as the Four Seasons Hotel and Residences at the Surf Club; St. Regis Bal Harbour; Faena Hotel and Residences; Porsche Design Tower; One Flagler West Palm Beach; South Flagler House; Bentley Residences; Aston Martin Residences; Santander Bank; St. Regis Residences Brickell; Shore Club Miami Beach and Four Seasons Residences Naples. In addition, the Company was the primary builder for Ocean Reef Club, Deering Bay Club, Miami Design District, Miami World Center and Water Street Tampa.

Coastal has 11 family members and three generations currently active in the business, along with hundreds of other team members, who may not share the same surname, but share the same sense of pride and unabashed desire to build quality projects.

Despite Coastal’s scale and success, Murphy has never measured achievement by buildings alone. His leadership philosophy was clear: pursue your dreams, but outwork everyone else to achieve those dreams. That ethos shaped Murphy’s three sons, Tom C. Murphy, Sean Murphy and Patrick E. Murphy who all grew up working at the family business.
