Miami-Dade County Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins and county commissioners are taking action to ensure Amazon honors its contractual obligations to South Dade residents following the company’s announcement in March that it plans to close its South Dade facility and eliminate 1000 jobs.

In 2020, Miami-Dade County conveyed public land to Amazon, with no competition for the development of a major distribution center, with the clear expectation of long-term job creation. As part of that agreement, Amazon committed to creating and maintaining a minimum of 325 full-time jobs.

Amazon’s planned closure in July 2026 undermines that commitment and the very purpose of the deal.

“When it comes to the private, for-profit use of county land — the people’s land — promises made must be promises kept,” Commissioner Cohen Higgins said. “Amazon made a binding commitment to create and maintain jobs in South Dade. I am simply requiring them to honor it.”

The legislation directs county administration to take all necessary actions to enforce the Declaration of Restrictions tied to the property, including pursuing legal remedies, if necessary. It also instructs the County Attorney’s Office to work in coordination with the administration to ensure compliance and uphold the economic development commitment of the original conveyance.

Additionally, the resolution requires a report back to the commission within 30 days outlining the status of enforcement efforts and Amazon’s plans regarding the facility and affected jobs.
