By Providing 20,000 Summer BreakSpot Meals and Hundreds of Out-of-School Programs, CSC is an Economic Engine for Broward County
Summer can present a significant challenge for working families. When school is out, parents often face the burden of finding affordable, reliable childcare while ensuring their children remain safe, engaged, and learning. To help meet that need, the Children’s Services Council (CSC) of Broward County funds a network of summer camps, out-of-school programs, and Summer BreakSpot food distributions that support children and families through the hot summer months. These programs address one of summer’s biggest challenges for working families by providing safe, structured environments for children while parents remain in the workforce.

“Summer is not a season of lost learning or lost productivity in Broward,” said Cindy Arenberg Seltzer, M.P.A., J.D., President/CEO of the Children’s Service Council of Broward County. “When children consistently fall behind over the summer, families and communities pay for it. That’s why CSC’s strategic investments in proven programs is so critical: children learn through play and strategic learning opportunities, while parents work. By investing directly into programs that support children and families, we reinforce our role as an important economic engine, keeping costs low for parents and businesses retaining their employees.”
Research consistently shows that students, particularly those from low-income households, are more likely to experience learning loss during the summer because they have less access to books, camps, and educational opportunities. CSC counters that trend by combining academics with hands-on enrichment for more than 250 campers. Summer initiatives regularly include daily literacy activities, STEM exploration, arts programming, and structured learning experiences so students return to school better prepared and positioned for long-term success.

Nutrition is another critical component of summer success. When school is out, many children lose regular access to healthy meals, which can affect concentration, energy levels, and readiness to learn. Through its investment in Summer BreakSpot, CSC is providing 20,000 free, nutritious meals for school-age children at trusted neighborhood locations, including housing authority sites, nonprofit organizations, faith-based facilities, and community centers throughout Broward County.
