The Coconut Grove Sailing Club has secured a landmark 40-year lease approval with the City of Miami, ensuring long-term stability for the historic waterfront institution and reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of the Coconut Grove community.
Approved by the City of Miami Commission following months of collaboration and engagement with City leadership, the new lease provides the Club with the certainty needed to continue serving members and the broader public for generations to come.
“This is a historic moment for our Club,” said Priska Urban, Commodore of the Coconut Grove Sailing Club. “After extensive preparation and partnership with the City, this long-term agreement ensures the continued stability, growth, and service of the Club well into the future.”
As outlined in the lease agreement, the Club will be responsible for building a new seawall and replacing two docks — including dredging — on city-owned property at 2990 South Bayshore Drive, at an anticipated cost of $3.75 million.
Urban credited the Club’s Lease Committee for its instrumental role in securing the agreement, praising the dedication and professionalism of those involved.
“Our sincere thanks go to Past Commodore Jeff Flanagan, Past Commodore Alyn Pruett, Director James Liebl, and Mark Hatfield,” Urban said. “Their tireless work, thoughtful guidance, and steadfast leadership strengthened the foundation upon which our future now firmly rests.”
Special recognition was also given to General Manager Lauren Simpson, whose leadership and organizational expertise proved critical throughout the process.

“Lauren’s unwavering support of the Lease Committee and her exceptional management were invaluable,” Urban added. “Her diligence and commitment to the Club’s mission played a key role in achieving this outcome.”
Urban also acknowledged the many Club members who attended the City Commission meetings, noting that their presence and advocacy demonstrated the unity of the Sailing Club community.
This lease represents far more than an administrative milestone, Urban noted. “It is a reaffirmation of our place in the community and a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when we work together with purpose and respect.”
After 80 years of promoting the sport of sailing, with the new 40-year term, the Coconut Grove Sailing Club looks ahead with renewed confidence, committed to preserving its traditions while advancing its mission for future generations.
