“I really love doing theater,” she says.

Going to New World was a huge change from her time at Palmetto Middle School.

“I think it’s such a special place,” she says. “It’s truly so interesting. In the musical theater section in my grade there are only 16 of us. I think that’s what I like. Not as many Advanced Placement classes as at Palmetto (her home school) but they are really invested in how you are doing as a student.”

Aboulhosn has been doing theater since she was a little girl.

“It’s a great way to connect with people,” she says.

Being in the musical theater department she participates in the district and state theater competitions.

This year, they qualified for the state level contest after receiving Top Honors at the district level.

“It was a cool experience,” she says. “We got a superior for the play. It’s the highest rating.”

This year, she directed a 10-minute play.

“It’s a cool program at New World,” she says. “Students write plays and students direct them. Two people who knew each other when they were young and they drifted and this was them seeing themselves for the first time since 20 years ago.”

Most often, Aboulhosn has worked behind the scenes in technical positions for school plays because the casting pool is super competitive.

As a senior, she expects to be in on-stage roles.

“In the handbook, you have to be cast in a main day production to graduate,” she says. “I want to be in the musical Anything Goes. I can be cast in the New Playwrights. I want to be involved in the performing side. I’ve done five in the tech positions.”

The New World schedule is very demanding. She leaves home at 6:30 a.m. and comes back at 5:30 p.m. When she was doing tech for shows, she would come home after 9 p.m.

At school, she is in the Jewish Student Union, the National Honor Society, the Chess Club, treasurer for the Nutrition Club, and she is a peer mentor for the Health Information Project.

She is applying to be on the JSU board next year.

She’s also a part of the tutoring program which matches tutors with freshmen, and they not only tutor the students, but they also help orient the new student to life at the school.

“Something this year they implemented to help the freshmen,” she says.

Outside of school, Aboulhosn is a volunteer at Friendship Circle, the program for special needs individuals. She participates in the Sunday Circle, where teens are paired with special needs individuals (mostly kids) and they do activities that range from art to dancing to sports.

She is also a member of the President’s Council, which decides on programs and activities.

Generally, the teens are paired with the same special needs person, but that can change.

“I did have a different girl than I did last year. You form a connection. Last year she was non-verbal. It was a challenge, but it made me better,” she says. “This year, the girl loves to talk. But both are similar the way they approach things. I’ve learned a lot from both of them.”

Aboulhosn sings at Temple Beth Am for the High Holidays. She also sings at Shabbat occasionally. Recently, Beth Am had a Broadway Shabbat where they used Broadway songs.

Her college plans include a STEM focused major. She hopes to do musical theater recreationally.
