The turnout was great, according to Jennifer Zika, the village’s Special Events and Programs coordinator.

“More than 1,500 people attended, watching as burger grilling contestants competed,” Zika said. “All were treated to the rock tunes of the Cutler Stew Band. Backyard Chefs and Restaurant Pros alike demonstrated their burger grilling prowess.”

She said that attendees were able to purchase tickets to sample each of the Pro category burgers and vote for their top choice. Top performers walked away with cash prizes, signage to boast their new title, and a trophy.

Village Mayor Karyn Cunningham served as a judge in the burger contest, along with Florida State Rep. Omar Blanco and David Sampedro from Panter Panter and Sampedro, a top sponsor of the event. They tasted and scored each burger.

“This event continues to grow because it captures the spirit of our village — energy, creativity, and community pride,” Mayor Cunningham said. “A huge shout out to our parks department for knocking it out of the ballpark. Seeing more than 1,500 people out enjoying Coral Reef Park is a reminder that the heart of our village is its people.”

The winners of the Bunder-dog category (amateurs) were Knecht Level Burgers, comprised of team members and long-time Palmetto Bay residents Chris Knecht, Martin Cannings and Tom Barbato. Both The Top Bun award for the best professional burger and the Bun-in-a Million People’s Choice award went to Babe’s Meat & Counter, a local staple in South Dade.

“Our goal this year was to grow this event and add burger samples for attendees,” said Fanny Carmona, Parks and Recreation director. “We accomplished both. It was a joy to see the community come together in such a fun way while enjoying Coral Reef Park, the centerpiece of Palmetto Bay.”

Sponsors of the event included Baptist Health, Nicklaus Children’s Palmetto Bay Outpatient and Urgent Care Center, Audi Miami South by The Collection, Panter Panter and Sampedro, SouthState Bank, and Our Lady of the Holy Rosary–St. Richard Church.
