Many public spaces — schools, theaters, and community gathering places — serve as cornerstones of connection where people come together and create lasting moments. Among the most accessible places in our community to create these experiences is at a Miami-Dade County park.
Think of the time you learned to swim at a community pool, learned to ride a bike on a trail[E(1.1][V(1.2], swung as high as you could on a swing, watched your child play catch in an open field, or hosted a gathering at a pavilion. Parks are more than just green spaces; they’re scrapbooks filled with memories from countless people in our community.
That’s the power of parks: they shape the values, traditions, and experiences we hold dear.
July is Park and Recreation Month, an annual awareness campaign established by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) to celebrate the role parks and recreation programs play in strengthening communities.
This year’s theme, “The Power of Parks,” perfectly captures what we believe at Miami-Dade County Parks. The power we have lies in our vision statement: “connecting people with parks for life.”
That vision guides our daily work as we strive to create vibrant spaces and outstanding experiences that allow our community to create lifelong memories. We do this by responsibly investing taxpayer dollars while remaining responsive to the changing needs of our residents and visitors.
Spanning approximately 14,000 acres, we oversee more than 300 parks. From neighborhood gems like Arcola Lakes Park and JL (Joe) and Enid W. Demps Park, to regional destinations such as Amelia Earhart Park and Tropical Park, these spaces provide opportunities for people of all ages to enjoy recreation, relaxation, and spontaneous moments of joy, made possible by passionate staff committed to making a difference in your day.
We also manage and protect extraordinary natural landscapes with rich biodiversity that offer one-of-a-kind experiences. Places such as Crandon Park, one of seven county-designated Heritage Parks, include a marina, beach and swimming area, nature center, and even a historic former zoo that’s been repurposed as a beautiful botanical garden.
Did you know Zoo Miami is a Miami-Dade County park? Our nationally accredited, world-renowned zoo embraces the responsibility of protecting endangered species while educating the public about wildlife conservation with more than 100 exhibits.
I bet you didn’t know that the beach along Miami-Dade County’s 17-mile coastline is considered the county’s largest park, or that a dedicated team monitors and protects sea turtle nests. Nearby, destinations such as Haulover Park and Arch Creek Park & Nature Center provide meaningful recreational opportunities while preserving some of South Florida’s most treasured historical and natural resources.
Many of the best experiences at parks don’t come with a cost. Some of life’s most rewarding moments happen outdoors, intentionally spent with family and friends. Whether it’s enjoying a picnic within the untouched landscape of Kendall Indian Hammocks Park, flying a kite along the shoreline at Matheson Hammock Park, or taking a walk, run, or bike ride along scenic trails, there are countless ways to enjoy our parks free of charge.
For those looking to stay active, Parks offers an abundance of programs and facilities. From tennis and volleyball to swimming and running, there are recreation spaces, athletic fields, and trails for every age and interest. We also have 12 designated dog-friendly park [WC(2.1][V(2.2]spaces where your four-legged companions can play and socialize.

The power of parks extends far beyond green spaces and recreational amenities. Parks strengthen local culture, foster personal growth, enhance mental and physical well-being, and bring people together across generations and backgrounds. Visit a familiar favorite or rediscover a place you haven’t seen in years — you may be surprised to find that the nostalgia you’ve been searching for has been waiting for you all along at a park near you.
Pack a bag, fill up a water bottle, and begin discovering the inspirational green spaces that surround us. Better yet, make it a challenge and try to visit them all!
