Emily Peters (EiY) is a sustainable artist and musician specializing in textile, metal, and sound art. Her practice as a sustainable and zero-waste artist, soundscape composer and multi-instrumentalist leads her to construct with discarded materials using non-toxic and Earth friendly methods of dyeing and creation, and compose soundscapes that are heavily influenced by nature and self inquiry. In her sound practice, she translates sensation into soundscapes. Her formal vocal training started at a tender age, continued intensively through young adulthood, and was reborn later in life through Southeast Asian and Native American chanting, singing and vibrational practices. Herbalism and movement practices also nourish and inform EiY’s work. She was born in LaCrosse, Wisconsin and lives and works in Miami, Florida. Emily received a Bachelor of Science in Clothing Design with a minor in Fine Art from University of Minnesota – Twin Cities in 2006. Emily has championed the Deering Estate’s cultural representation at large-scale Deering Events such as Seafood Festival, where she volunteered to upcycle clothing into unique tote bags. Emily continues to share her practice and passions with the Deering Estate team by participating in community-facing opportunities such as Meet-the-AIRs; Deering Estate’s monthly artist gathering.

About the Artist-in-Residence Program
The Deering Estate is proud to house 17 brilliant Artists-in-Residence for the 2026 season. Each artist interprets the historical, architectural, intellectual, archeological, and natural elements of the Deering Estate in their own artistic practice, while pursuing innovative projects, studio work, connecting with other artists, and engaging the public. Each artist has a unique artistic practice, including but not limited to painting, sculpture, photography, cinematography, performance arts and the literary arts.

Deering Estate, located at 16701 SW 72 Ave. in Miami, is a 21st Century house museum, cultural and ecological field station, and a national landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, owned by the State of Florida and managed by Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department. Deering Estate is designated as one of seven Miami-Dade County “Heritage Parks” which have a vital role in our community’s history, environment and in providing recreational and cultural experiences.
