I’ll admit it. Most weeks I’m writing about what’s wrong with Miami-Dade County. Government waste. Traffic. Housing costs. Bureaucracy. Lack of transparency. Those are real problems, and taxpayers deserve someone willing to ask the tough questions.

But this week is different.
This week, let’s talk about what Miami-Dade is doing right. Because despite all the criticism, we live in one of the greatest counties in America.
Spend five minutes on social media or watching the evening news and you would think Miami-Dade County is falling apart. Every day there is another story about traffic, rising housing costs, insurance, flooding, or government dysfunction. Those challenges are real, and they deserve attention. But if all we ever do is focus on what is wrong, we lose sight of everything this community has accomplished. Sometimes it’s important to stop complaining long enough to recognize just how fortunate we are. Miami-Dade isn’t perfect, but neither is any great community.
Four Decades of Watching Miami-Dade Grow
After publishing Community Newspapers for more than four decades, I’ve watched Miami-Dade grow from a collection of neighborhoods into one of the most dynamic counties in America. I’ve seen families arrive with little more than hope and determination, only to build successful businesses, raise children, and create opportunities for future generations. I’ve watched companies expand, hospitals grow, schools improve, and neighborhoods reinvent themselves. That doesn’t happen in a county that’s standing still. It happens in a community where people believe the future can be even better than the present.
People Keep Choosing Miami-Dade
Every day people continue to choose Miami-Dade. They move here to start businesses, raise families, attend our colleges and universities, work in our hospitals, invest in commercial real estate — and chase the American Dream. They could choose hundreds of other communities across America, yet they choose Miami-Dade. People vote with their feet, and every day they cast another vote of confidence in this county. That tells me we are doing far more right than many people are willing to admit.
The Real Story Has Always Been the People
The real story of Miami-Dade has never been government. It has always been its people. The entrepreneur opening a new business. The restaurant owner greeting customers before sunrise. The contractor building another home. The teacher preparing tomorrow’s lesson. The nurse finishing a long shift. The police officer beginning another patrol. The firefighter answering another emergency call. These are the people who built this county long before politicians took credit for it, and they continue building it every single day. They don’t wait for government to solve every problem. They roll up their sleeves and get to work.
Assets Other Communities Would Love to Have
Miami-Dade is blessed with assets that communities across America would love to have. Miami International Airport connects us to nearly every corner of the world and serves as one of the nation’s great economic engines. PortMiami generates billions of dollars in economic activity while supporting thousands of local jobs. Our hospitals provide world-class healthcare. Our colleges and universities educate tomorrow’s workforce. Our parks, libraries, beaches, and cultural institutions make this a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family. Millions of people visit every year because they want to experience what we sometimes take for granted.
Diversity Is Our Greatest Strength
Our diversity remains one of our greatest strengths. People from every corner of the world have brought new ideas, different cultures, and an entrepreneurial spirit that has transformed Miami-Dade into an international center for business, tourism, and innovation. Few communities anywhere can match the energy, creativity, and resilience that diversity has produced here. We don’t succeed despite our differences. We succeed because of them.

I’m also proud of the men and women who protect this community every day. Hurricane season reminds us how prepared Miami-Dade has become. Police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and emergency managers rarely ask for recognition. They simply show up when they’re needed most. They protect our families, our homes, and our businesses with professionalism and dedication, often without receiving the credit they deserve.
Small Businesses: The Backbone of Miami-Dade
Then there are our small businesses. They continue to amaze me. Rising insurance costs, inflation, labor shortages, and government regulations have made running a business harder than ever. Yet every morning they unlock their doors, serve customers, create jobs, meet payroll, and keep our local economy moving. They sponsor Little League teams, support local charities, and donate to community events. They truly are the backbone of Miami-Dade County, and we should never forget it.
Fair Means Recognizing Success, Too
Does that mean everything is perfect? Of course not. Housing is still too expensive. Traffic remains frustrating. Government can still move too slowly, spend too much money, and make decisions that deserve greater public scrutiny. We need more transparency, more accountability, and better customer service from every level of government. I’ll continue writing about those issues because taxpayers deserve nothing less.
But being fair also means recognizing success. Miami-Dade didn’t become one of America’s great counties because government had all the answers. It became great because generations of hardworking people believed in this community. They built businesses. They created jobs. They raised families. They volunteered. They invested. They refused to give up when times were tough.
I’ve Never Stopped Believing
I’ve spent more than 40 years covering this community. I’ve praised elected officials when they earned it and criticized them when they didn’t. Through it all, one thing has never changed. I’ve never stopped believing in the people of Miami-Dade County. Governments come and go. Political leaders come and go. But the people keep building a better community.
That’s why, despite our challenges, I remain optimistic. Miami-Dade has much to be proud of. And I still believe our best days are ahead.
