Zawyer, who passed away on Oct. 24, 2024, had served for decades in the Miami-Dade County School System and also provided “unmatched guidance and inspiration” during his many years on the village’s Education Advisory Committee.
Zawyer was the former high school principal of three full magnet schools. He was the founding principal of Coral Reef Senior High School, founding principal of Robert Morgan High School, founding principal of MAST at Homestead High School and the consultant of the newly opened MAST at FIU. He also was a mentor to several principals and assistant principals.
The ceremony brought together members of his family, Palmetto Bay village officials and representatives of Miami-Dade County.
“Today, we had the privilege of dedicating a street in honor of Greg Zawyer — a beloved neighbor, friend, mentor and one of the most influential educators in Miami-Dade County,” said village Mayor Karyn Cunningham. “For more than 50 years, Greg devoted his life to helping young people discover their potential.
“As a visionary educator and founding principal of some of our community’s most respected schools, he created opportunities for thousands of students and inspired generations of teachers and administrators,” Mayor Cunningham continued.
Cunningham also said that Zawyer’s impact reached far beyond the classroom, that he was a community leader who believed deeply in the power of education to transform lives, and saw promise where others saw obstacles, and that he worked tirelessly to help others succeed.

“To the Zawyer family, thank you for sharing Greg with our community,” Mayor Cunningham said. “It was an honor to celebrate his extraordinary legacy today. May everyone who passes this sign be reminded that one person’s dedication can truly change the lives of many.”
The name change, “Greg Zawyer Street.” was effective immediately and has been duly recorded with the United States Postal Service.
