Citizenship is about more than rights; it is about responsibility. Strong communities are built by people who invest their time, talents and energy in the well-being of others. Each act of service strengthens the fabric of our communities, and when citizens are engaged, neighborhoods become safer, communities become stronger, and future generations learn the values that sustain a healthy society.

Many Americans choose to serve in even greater ways, answering the call to military service, law enforcement, firefighting. Countless men and women have sacrificed, and so many have given their lives, to protect our nation and our communities. Their dedication reflects the highest ideals of patriotism and service before self.

As we commemorate America’s 250th birthday, let us honor those who have served by embracing our own responsibilities as citizens. Patriotism is not measured only by what we say, but by what we do. Each of us has the ability to make a positive difference in our communities. By serving others, strengthening our neighborhoods and remaining engaged in civic life, we help ensure that the values that shaped this nation 250 years ago continue to guide it for generations to come.
