Food insecurity remains a growing challenge across Miami-Dade County, particularly among older adults living on fixed incomes. Rising grocery prices, housing costs, and transportation barriers have made it increasingly difficult for many seniors to access nutritious meals. For vulnerable older adults, food insecurity impacts far more than hunger, it affects health, independence, and overall quality of life.

Addressing food insecurity is a core part of Jewish Community Services of South Florida’s (JCS) mission. Through programs including JCS Delivers, Kosher Home Delivered Meals, Senior Ride, Congregate Meals, and the JCS Kosher Food Bank, JCS helps ensure that older adults have access to nutritious food, social engagement, and supportive services that allow them to age with dignity.
Many seniors served by JCS rely on Social Security and other public benefits, with some living on less than $900 per month. When SNAP benefits were temporarily suspended in November 2025, many older adults faced an immediate food crisis. In response, JCS provided grocery gift cards to affected seniors, helping them continue purchasing essential groceries during a difficult time.
JCS’ comprehensive approach addresses both immediate and long-term needs. The JCS Delivers Shopping Program provides personalized grocery deliveries and wellness checks for homebound seniors. The Kosher Home Delivered Meals Program supplies nutritious frozen meals to older adults who are unable to shop or cook independently. The Senior Ride Program offers transportation to meal sites, grocery stores, medical appointments, and community activities, helping seniors remain connected and independent. Meanwhile, the Congregate Meals Program serves hot kosher lunches in Miami Beach and Aventura while fostering social interaction and community engagement.

For Maria, an 82-year-old Miami Beach resident living alone on less than $900 per month, these services became a lifeline. Following the temporary suspension of her SNAP benefits, JCS provided grocery gift cards, transportation assistance, and access to congregate meals. Today, Maria regularly attends the Miami Beach meal site, where she enjoys nutritious lunches, participates in activities, and connects with friends. She says the program has helped her feel healthier and less isolated.
Through dedicated staff, community partnerships, and generous donor support, JCS continues to help vulnerable seniors access the food and care they need to maintain their health, independence, and quality of life.
