The City of Miami celebrated an important new chapter this week as <\/span>Chief Edwin Lopez<\/b> was officially sworn in as the new <\/span>Chief of Police for the City of Miami Police Department<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>

The swearing-in ceremony was held on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts\u2019 Ziff Ballet Opera House, bringing together elected officials, community leaders, law enforcement partners, family, friends, and members of the public.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chief Lopez steps into this new role with nearly three decades of law enforcement experience. Before joining the City of Miami, he served as Chief of Police for the City of Doral, where he became well known for his leadership, professionalism, and strong connection with the community. Prior to his time in Doral, Lopez spent 25 years with Miami-Dade Schools Police, including serving as that department\u2019s chief.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the City of Miami, his appointment comes at an important time. Miami continues to grow as one of the most recognized and dynamic cities in the country, and public safety remains a top priority for residents, businesses, visitors, and neighborhoods throughout the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

During his swearing-in, Chief Lopez shared his commitment to leading with integrity, supporting the officers of the Miami Police Department, and continuing to build strong relationships with the community. Those who know him describe him as approachable, steady, and deeply committed to public service.<\/span><\/p>\n

His move to Miami is also a proud, and bittersweet, moment for the City of Doral. Chief Lopez made a lasting impact during his time there, helping strengthen the police department and building trust with residents, business owners, and community organizations.<\/span><\/p>

Manny Sarmiento, President and CEO of the Doral Chamber of Commerce, said Chief Lopez will be greatly missed in Doral.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe love Chief Edwin Lopez and are extremely proud of him as he takes on this very important role as City of Miami Police Chief,\u201d<\/span><\/i> said Sarmiento. <\/span>\u201cAt the same time, we are really going to miss him here in the City of Doral. Chief Lopez has been a respected leader, a friend to our community, and a strong supporter of public safety and business in Doral. Miami is very lucky to have him, and we wish him tremendous success.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

As Miami\u2019s new police chief, Lopez will now lead one of the most visible law enforcement agencies in South Florida. His responsibilities will include serving residents, supporting officers, protecting neighborhoods, working with businesses, and addressing the evolving public safety needs of a major urban city.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chief Lopez\u2019s swearing-in is more than a change in leadership. It is the beginning of a new chapter for the Miami Police Department and for the communities it serves.<\/span><\/p>\n
