Small business owners are struggling to stay profitable, homeowners are being hammered by insurance premiums and property taxes, and seniors living on fixed incomes are stretching every dollar they have. Residents here are already dealing with soaring housing costs and insurance rates that seem to climb every few months. Meanwhile, county government keeps coming back with the same answer to every challenge: more spending, more fees, and more taxes.

And honestly, taxpayers are getting tired of it.

At some point, residents have every right to ask when county leaders will start examining their own spending habits with the same seriousness families are forced to show at home. How much is enough?

Recently, our review uncovered examples where Miami-Dade County is spending nearly $2 million annually paying outside vendors for work the county already has the legal authority to perform itself — for far less money.

This column is not about attacking one service, one department, or one vendor. There is a reason we are not publicly identifying the exact services involved. If county officials turn this into a debate about one isolated service, they avoid the much bigger issue taxpayers should be paying attention to.

The problem is the mindset inside government. Somewhere along the way, protecting taxpayer dollars stopped being the priority while protecting the system became more important.

The spending keeps growing. The contracts keep renewing. And taxpayers keep carrying the burden.

Everybody sees it.

If examples like this exist in several areas of county government, residents deserve to know how widespread the problem really is. Taxpayers should not have to wonder how many millions of dollars are spent every year simply because nobody inside government wants to challenge the status quo.

This is not government money. It belongs to the people working every day to pay mortgages, rent, insurance bills, utility costs, and property taxes. It belongs to the business owner in Kendall trying to keep employees working, the family in Hialeah struggling with inflation, the homeowner in Doral overwhelmed by rising expenses, and retirees across Miami-Dade trying to hold onto financial stability while county spending continues climbing.

Those residents are expected to live within their means. Government should do the same.

Read more Adam Smith Center honors FIFA president, six others as “champions of freedom”

But too often Miami-Dade government behaves as though taxpayer dollars are unlimited. Spending increases become normalized, contracts quietly roll forward, and residents who ask questions are sometimes treated like they are the problem.

People don’t mind paying taxes when they believe government is being responsible. What frustrates people is the feeling that government spending never slows down — no matter what taxpayers are going through.

That frustration is fueling a growing loss of public trust. People are tired of hearing speeches about transparency while getting few clear answers about where the money is going. They are tired of watching waste defended rather than eliminated, and they are tired of being told taxpayers must always contribute more before government seriously considers spending less.

Families understand there are consequences for overspending. Government should understand that too.

The private sector cannot survive by endlessly demanding more money without controlling costs. Families cannot operate that way. Small businesses cannot operate that way. Yet government often behaves as though financial discipline is optional.

Taxpayers are not crazy for asking questions. They’re paying the bills.

County leaders should welcome scrutiny instead of resisting it. Taxpayers asking questions is not a threat to government — it is part of accountability. Honest government should never fear accountability.

Before Miami-Dade County asks residents for another tax increase, fee increase, bond issue, or additional source of revenue, taxpayers deserve more than another polished presentation or another public relations campaign. Taxpayers deserve to know somebody inside county government is actually trying to save them money.

People across Miami-Dade are making tough financial decisions every single day. County government should start doing the same.

Have information about government spending, waste, or issues impacting taxpayers in Miami-Dade County?
