Nearly\u00a09\u00a0out of 10 adults struggle to understand basic\u00a0terms about health\u00a0care\u00a0and health\u00a0insurance, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u00a0(CDC).<sup>1<\/sup><\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/miamimovershub.com\/?p=329\">Everything in Between: Kiki Nunez with Guest Ashley Brosky, Serial Entrepreneur and Motherhood<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization estimates\u00a0that this\u00a0\u201clanguage barrier\u201d\u00a0can\u00a0cost\u00a0American adults\u00a0between $143 to $7,798\u00a0more\u00a0per year on health care,<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>totaling up to\u00a0$238 billion\u00a0in unnecessary costs annually.<sup>3<\/sup>\u00a0It also\u00a0can\u00a0lead to skipped\u00a0preventive care and\u00a0unnecessaryhospital stays, the CDC report states.<\/p>\n<p>Health care can be confusing\u00a0and\u00a0expensive\u00a0\u2013 especially if you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0understand where to get care and what your share of the cost is.\u00a0You may have questions like: \u201cWhat\u2019s a copay?\u201d or \u201cWhat does\u00a0being\u00a0<em>in-network<\/em>\u00a0really mean?\u201d\u00a0People who understand health and insurance terms are better able to make\u00a0more\u00a0informed decisions about their care, according to a 2025 article in the journal \u201cAtencion Primaria.\u201d<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Getting familiar with\u00a0health insurance terms can help avoid surprise bills<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHealth education is\u00a0an important part of\u00a0health coverage,\u201d said\u00a0David Wagner, market president, Florida Blue. \u201cWhen people understand\u00a0key health insurance\u00a0terms and\u00a0concepts, they\u00a0are better prepared to make\u00a0informed\u00a0choices for their health and their budgets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u00a0are\u00a0some of the most common health insurance terms\u00a0people need to know:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Premium:<\/strong>\u00a0A premium is money you\u00a0pay\u00a0your insurance company\u00a0regularly, usually monthly, to have your health insurance plan. Think of it\u00a0like\u00a0a membership fee \u2013 you\u2019ll\u00a0pay this amount to ensure you have coverage when you need it.\u00a0This amount\u00a0is\u00a0due\u00a0whether\u00a0or not\u00a0anyone on the plan used their\u00a0benefits during the month.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Those\u00a0enrolled in a Marketplace plan\u00a0may\u00a0qualify for a\u00a0<strong>premium tax credit<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>subsidy\u00a0<\/strong>(financial\u00a0help from the government),\u00a0which\u00a0may cover part or\u00a0all of\u00a0the monthly\u00a0premium.*<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0If you get your health insurance through your job, your premium is usually taken out of your paycheck automatically.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0If you have Medicare, most people choose to have their\u00a0premium deducted automatically\u202ffrom their Social Security benefit payment.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Network:<\/strong>\u00a0Each insurance plan has a\u00a0group (<strong>network)\u00a0<\/strong>of doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies (<strong>providers)<\/strong>\u00a0who agree to take care of people enrolled\u00a0in the\u00a0health insurance\u00a0plan. The insurance company negotiates a discounted cost for health<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>care\u00a0from\u00a0these\u00a0<strong>in-network providers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Allowed amount:\u00a0<\/strong>This is the discounted rate\u00a0a health plan\u2019s member will pay when they receive care\u00a0or prescription drugs\u00a0from an\u00a0<strong>in-network\u00a0provider.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Deductible<\/strong>:\u00a0Most plans have an annual deductible \u2013 a\u00a0set\u00a0dollar amount you must pay toward\u00a0the\u00a0costs of\u00a0your\u00a0covered services before insurance starts to pay.\u00a0Every dollar\u00a0an individual\u00a0spends\u00a0on covered medical care or prescription drugs\u00a0during the\u00a0plan\u00a0year\u00a0goes\u00a0toward\u00a0this amount.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Out-of-pocket maximum:\u00a0<\/strong>This is the most a person will pay for covered services in a single year.
