Sweet revenge for the Canes, who took game 1 from the team that kept them from living their dream of advancing to Omaha last year. It was the pitching of Rob Evans, looking like the Evans we have come to expect, and an explosive 5th inning that carried the day for the Canes. However, the defense, with the exception of Fabio\u2019s defensive catch of the game in the 7th inning, had another typical bad day at the office. Miami\u2019s two errors, which easily could have added two more to the stats, coughed up 4 runs, preventing an early termination in the 7th due to the run rule. All aside, it was an excellent display of offensive power and a Cardinals bullpen that carried the day for the Canes, locking down game one 13-8.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
Rob started strong, striking out the first two batters he faced and seeming to cruise through the first inning until the defense unexpectedly faltered. A routine third out, 6-3, turned into a disaster when Sheahan\u2019s throw to first went awry. The result: two runs scored on Griffin Crain\u2019s double to left. Once again, poor defensive plays led to runs.<\/div>\n
Jake Ogden once again comes to the rescue with an opening triple in the bottom of the first, while Max Galvin grounds out, cutting the Cardinals\u2019 lead in half. The score remains 2-1 in Louisville\u2019s favor until the fifth inning, when the Cardinals\u2019 starter is forced to leave the game due to injury. Louisville then relies on its bullpen, which proves to be a weakness. With Danilowicz\u2019s exit, Miami\u2019s hitters seize the opportunity. Thirteen batters come to the plate, resulting in nine runs on six hits and three walks, and the depletion of three relief pitchers. All of Miami\u2019s hits are singles. By the end of five innings, Miami has opened up a commanding lead and is poised for an early conclusion if its offensive momentum continues.<\/div>\n
As in the first inning, Rob gets through the first two outs in the sixth after a lead-off walk, but again, poor defense allows two more runs. It wasn\u2019t scored as an error, but a hard line drive off Milano\u2019s glove\u2014something Cuvet would have handled easily\u2014led to the runner from first scoring, followed by a second double that brought in another run. These four runs were largely undeserved, the result of subpar defensive play. The score stands at 10-4 after six innings.<\/div>\n
Miami responded in the seventh inning by batting around, scoring three runs through a sequence of three walks and three singles. Alvarez began the inning with a single. A stolen base to second was nullified by a catcher\u2019s interference call on Sheahan. After Sheahan\u2019s strikeout, the next six Miami batters alternated between walks and singles, culminating in Williams\u2019 RBI single that scored two. Miami was just 90 feet away from winning the game with the bases loaded, but unfortunately, West flies out to left field, and the game continues with the score at 13-4.<\/div>\n
Nick Robert made his second appearance after returning from Tommy John surgery. He entered in the seventh inning, replacing Rob, who had completed the sixth inning after throwing 95 pitches, striking out eight, and allowing four runs\u2014though I believe all were unearned. No runs scored in the seventh, which featured a remarkable catch by Fabio in center field and a less impressive play by Williams in right, who missed a catch he should have made, leaving a man on second. Fortunately, this defensive miscue did not result in a run.<\/div>\n
Rather than bringing Robert back out for the 8th, I would have gone to the BP with a nine-run lead and save him if we needed him for another day, if necessary. Nick started the 8th, leading off with a strikeout, followed by a walk and a single, which concluded his night. As I implied, why push him just yet? JD brought in Jake Dorn, who has usually been used as one of our first relievers. I might have switched the rotation between Robert and Dorn and utilized Robert for the later innings. Being just a fan, so what do I know? Jake comes in to relieve Nick and walks the first batter to load the bases. No lead is ever comfortable with the Canes, like we saw in the NCS series and so many others. 0-2 count on Ben Slanker, and it is bye-bye birdie for a Grand Slam, narrowing the nine-run lead to five. Bradley-Cooney was brought in to finish the inning without further damage. After eight innings, the score is 13-8<\/div>\n
JD, hesitant to take further risks with the unpredictable BP, turns to the one person who has consistently proven capable: Lyndon Glidewell. Even Glidewell is not infallible. An opening single advances to an E1 on a failed pickoff attempt at first. With a man on second and no outs, Lyndon illustrates why he is our closer with a strikeout, a flyout to right (without a tag-up), and a second strikeout to seal the game.<\/div>\n
All players were men on deck, with each recording at least one hit, except for Fabio Peralta, who drew two walks. The team posted an overall batting average of .389 and, remarkably, struck out only once. They finished 7-14 with runners in scoring position and 5-7 with the bases loaded. Jake Ogden led all hitters, going 4-5 with a triple, followed by Gabriel Milano\u2019s 2-4. Defensively, there is definitely room for improvement, but at the plate, he has clearly arrived. Alex Sosa was the only other player with multiple hits, going 2-4. Max Galvin recorded the team\u2019s only double among 11 total hits.<\/div>\n
Enough said about the defense tonight. Plain and simple: If the defense doesn\u2019t tighten its game, it will cost us the chance to advance in the postseason. If we are fortunate enough to make it to Omaha, be assured, they will be our Achilles Heel in the end. The same can be said of our BP.<\/div>\n
Tomorrow, Lazaro Collera will be pitching as he aims to secure the series victory. The game begins at 7 PM.<\/div>\n\n
